Jack Reacher asked: I choose to celebrate “Civil Rights Day,” because I believe there are a ton of people out there more deserving of their own holiday than MLK Jr. The man was a great organizer and leader during a turbulent time, but the PC brigade has just about buried all the skeletons he had riding in his closet, polishing up his image to a mirror sheen. A flawed man, indeed, despite some of the good he has done, and his ability to speak well.
The Civil Rights Movement, as pertains to “Blacks,” or “African-Americans” or whatever PC phrase we’re using nowadays to segregate them, began as an idividual struggle amongst thousands of individuals, long before one boy’s father changed his name to Martin Luther King. In fact, long before that boy was ever born. He was a swell on a crashing wave that had built up for many, many years. He wasn’t the end-all-be-all personnae of the civil rights movement, just as Jesse Jackson isn’t the “Emperor of Black People” as he seems to think.
That being said, I believe we should have a Martin Luther Day, after the protestant reformationist.
When Martin Luther nailed his protest up to the church door in 1517, he may not have realised the full significance of what he was doing, but… 400 years later, thanks to him, I can wear whatever I want on my John Thomas. I can go down the road any time I want and walk into Harry’s and hold my head up high, and say in a loud steady voice: ‘Harry I want you to sell me a condom. In fact, today I think I’ll have a French Tickler, for I am a Protestant.’
That’s what being a protestant is all about, and that’s why it’s the church for me. And that’s why I think Martin Luther himself should have his very own day.
